What is meditation?

Learning to meditate is a personal journey, which is undertaken slowly and over time. There is no right and no wrong and there are no deadlines. To stop for a minute and, without trying to control your thoughts, just detach yourself and have a look at what you are thinking. You will be surprised how much ‘junk’ passes through your mind. Meditation ultimately lets you control your thoughts and eliminate the ‘noise and chatter’, which seemingly empties your mind, reducing the stresses of our hectic modern day dramatically.

Meditation is less the discovery of a new skill, than the rediscovery of a natural state of mind that is always there and has always been there, behind the surface chatter that usually claims our attention. It is also ideal for physical relaxation and is the reason why first time meditators often fall asleep.

 

How can meditation help me?

 

People meditate for many reasons. It can be very relaxing and calming as you sit quietly, which aids the control of stress.

To put one’s day-to-day thoughts on hold for a time is very satisfying. It is also helpful to gain an understanding of your inner self as you slowly grow to understand your mind better, through silence. Silence is a valuable teacher. To be able to block out the outside world, even for a short time, can be uplifting. To be able to let thoughts go completely, if they are not longer wanted, is true progress.
